Dou Kejun has more than 15 years of experience in strategy, planning and policy research in the bioenergy. His research focuses on the development roadmap of the bioenergy, scenario analysis and outlook, various bioenergy technology pathway, feedstock logistic services systems, industry standard systems, incentive policies, etc. At BEIPA, he is mainly responsible for bioenergy policy and standards certification system research and international cooperation and promotion.

Niclas’s research and teaching address the role of forests in mitigating climate change and supporting a circular economy. His work on the climate impacts of bioenergy and biomass use includes systems analysis of carbon dynamics in ecosystem/techno-economic system complexes. His research on biomass resources focuses on the quantification and characterisation of biomass resources from agriculture and forestry on local to global scales. His work on the sustainability of biomass production and use includes ecosystem services trade-off and synergy analysis, LCA, lifecycle thinking, and material flow analysis.

Dave has a research background in life cycle assessment (LCA) of bio-based systems at University of Galway. His research group applies prospective LCA alongside biophysical agriculture, forestry and land use models to understand the climate consequences of different bioeconomy configurations, accounting for value chain and inter-system effects. This work is increasing being framed through a foresight lens that reflects wider consequences, and explores resilience to uncertain future contexts.

Floor van der Hilst (Task Leader, NTL) - Professor Sustainable Land Use, Utrecht University
Floor is an interdisciplinary scholar on sustainable land use. Her research focuses on land-use change resulting from an increasing demand for biomass and the environmental and socio-economic impacts thereof. She is particularly interested in the potential synergies and trade-offs between the impacts of land-use change on climate, biodiversity, and other sustainability objectives.

Costanza’s research focuses on the sustainability of the bioeconomy, particularly the role of sustainability certification in promoting sustainable biobased product supply chains. Her work examines the effectiveness, feasibility, and impacts of sustainability certification schemes, as well as their role in supporting sustainability governance and the implementation of EU bioeconomy policies.
Joyce De Wit - Advisor sustainability assurance biomass at the Dutch Enterprise Agency (RVO)
Rijksdienst voor onderdernemend Nederland (RVO) or in English the Dutch Enterprise Agency is a regulator. We help ministeries design policy instruments and operate them. Joyce was involved with the Dutch sustainability framework for biomass used for electricity and heat production that receives subsidy (SDE). This Dutch framework was allready in place before RED extended the scope from transport only to electricity and heat production. Now this framework will be fased out and replaced by a Dutch framework for biomass use for all purposes (also chemical or construction) based on the criteria from RED. RVO is assisting the ministery in the design of this framework and will in the future play a role in connecting the framework to subsidy schemes or other policy measures. Recently also involved in gaining more policy relevant insights in carbon management.

Göran’s research integrates human land and biomass use and transport/industrial/energy systems at scales ranging from local case studies to the global context. He is interested in solution-oriented research to address climate change and other sustainability challenges. Much of his research concerns the development and application of analytical frameworks to study the climate and environmental impacts of bioenergy and other bio-based systems, and how the use of bio-based systems can help address climate challenges while reducing the negative impacts of current agriculture and forestry.

Ruth Delzeith (NTL) - Associate Professor in Global and Regional Land-Use Change, University of Basel
Ruth is an interdisciplinary scholar trained in geography, agricultural sciences and economics. Her research focuses on the analysis of land-use change, (bio)energy, and water use. The aim of her research is to understand interrelated processes of global change and their impacts on the scarce resource land as well as possible trade-offs and synergies in the use of biomass. In doing so, she combines biophysical and economic simulation models.

Zoe has been working in the bioenergy space for nearly 15 years. Her interest include the impacts of cultivating dedicated bioenergy crops on the land, especially on GHG emissions and biodiversity. She is also interested in the role of other innovative technologies, such as soilless cultivation, to supply biomass and also to spare land for biomass production. Patrick Lamers (NTL) - Strategic Partnerships & Group Lead, Strategic Energy Analysis Center, National Renewable Energy Laboratory
Dr. Patrick Lamers is a senior researcher and lead strategist at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Golden, Colorado. He leads the Complex Decision Analysis Group focused on advancing prospective energy system and technology analyses linking techno-economic, life cycle, and integrated assessment modeling. His work informs several U.S. Department of Energy offices and Fortune 500 companies. He serves as NREL’s liaison to the Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium (IAMC) and has over 15 years of experience in life cycle and cross-sector modeling. Before joining the U.S. national lab system, he worked in the private sector.
