Task 45: Climate and Sustainability Effects of Bioenergy within the Circular Bioeconomy

Call for Papers: Article Collection on Biomass and Bioenergy in Pathways Towards Low-Carbon Futures

As efforts to achieve net-zero emissions gather pace around the world, questions surrounding the role of biomass and bioenergy remain at the forefront of scientific, policy and public debate. Biomass and bioenergy feature prominently in many decarbonisation pathways, yet their deployment raises important questions about sustainability, land use, environmental impacts, carbon removal and wider societal trade-offs.

We are pleased to announce a new article collection, Biomass and Bioenergy in Pathways Towards Low-Carbon Futures, in the journal Carbon Management, which aims to bring together cutting-edge research exploring the opportunities, challenges and trade-offs associated with biomass and bioenergy in low-carbon futures.

The article collection is aligned with the work we do here in Task 45: Climate and Sustainability Effects of Bioenergy within the Circular Bioeconomy, in which our international consortium seeks to improve understanding of the climate and sustainability implications of bioenergy systems within a circular bioeconomy. With interest in bioenergy continuing to grow, alongside increasing scrutiny of its sustainability credentials, we are excited to see new research helping to inform evidence-based debate and decision-making in this important area.

This collection provides an opportunity for researchers from across disciplines to contribute new evidence, perspectives and insights on the role of biomass and bioenergy in low-carbon futures. We are particularly keen to see submissions that help inform decision-making by addressing real-world sustainability challenges and exploring how bioenergy can contribute to climate mitigation alongside broader environmental and societal goals.

The collection is being guest edited by Göran Berndes (Chalmers University of Technology), Ruth Delzeit (University of Basel), Soheil Shayegh (CMCC Foundation) and Florian Kraxner (IIASA), bringing together expertise spanning bioenergy systems, sustainability assessment, land-use change, climate policy and integrated modelling.

The submission deadline is 7 May 2027.
